No central heat, no air conditioning, limited electrical power, outdoor bathroom facilities, living space about 200 sq ft.

Counting very modest rent and all your living necessities, it will only last you 6 months in big cities in China like Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, etc. Head inland towards the West, it will last you almost twice as long, like in Chengdu, Chongqing, Kunming, etc. Probably three to four times as long if you live in villages in huts and so on.

Is it $5000 in RMB or USD?? Anyway, it really depends on your rent and how you would spend it. I would say 2 weeks to one month in Shanghai If you were in Zhuhai, then 1.5 month

If you're going to the bigger cities, then it will last you 5-6 months.

i lived on $600 in 2 week, thats not including hotels. Food is cheap, taxi and trains very cheap. you can eat at resturants every night no problems , very cheap. all depends what you want to do i guess..

avoid shanghai, beijing, hongkong, shenzhen. live on RMB 3 yuan noodles and live in 20-30yuan accomodation. you should last a mighty long time
