How much does it cost to live in Shanghai, China and are there any cheap apartments there

How much does it cost to live in Shanghai, China and are there any cheap apartments there?
I'm thinking of moving to Shanghai in 2009 for a year when I graduate high school next year and am wondering about the cost in USA dollars. Thanks.

Cost of living in shanghai is increasing rapidly, but is still a lot cheaper to than Singapore, Hong Kong or Taipei. By 2009, 1 USD is still than more than 7 yuan. U can get a decent apartment, 75m2 , within walking distance to metro station for 3500 yuan/month. Rental of a 2 bedroom apartment, likely to be 7000 yuan per month. Rental exclude utility bills, but these expenses are rather insignificant. There are many property agents that are very professional, who can get you a place wthin your budget, for a fee of 35% of one month rent. The key problems is U have to stay away from where other expatriates live, which tend to be very expensive. Shanghai is much safer than US cities, and she is repaidly developing the metro network, so u can live slight far away from down town area. Restaurant serving local food is cheap, metro (2- 5 yuan) and bus(2 yuan flat) are mostly new and air-conditioned, but the are extremely croweded. Taxi starts 11 yuan/3 km or 14 yuan after 11pm. Unless u insist on products of international brands which are dearer that elsewhere, otherwise shanghai has everthing u ever need.

Because most people live in China. And Atheist are not a religion...
2 :
Wow...
3 :
Atheistism is not a religion.
4 :
Wrong, there are many religions and tribal beliefs in China, you couldnt be more incorrect in your massive, sweeping generalisation.
5 :
Why do most atheists speak Chinese?
6 :
Because Chinese have fewer report monkees?
7 :
Because their education system has been really good for a long time.
8 :
I do not know many atheists in China , most appear to be Buddhist .
9 :
Wow, you're an intellectual giant. Us poor atheists can never compete with such as you.
10 :
Good point. You are very bright. You are clearly a Christian theologian.
11 :
?????????? That's bullcrap.
12 :
Because under Mao religion was forcibly supressed, and because China has a massive population. I can't help but think this question is trying to make some point, though I can't for the life of me fathom what it might be?
13 :
Dude, that is a leap to a conclusion. The Cultural Revolution initiated by Chairman Mao mandated that religion not be practiced in the Republic of China. Most people born after that edict knew nothing about religion and therefore did not practice it.
14 :
Wow. There are very clever people in China. I'm not saying that God isn't real, but there are more people to become scientists who prove that God isn't real. And then they have kids who are brought up not to believe in God & so on.
15 :
China was completely and totally Communist and nationalistic for decades, and now it's easing up on the rule; it's still Communist and nationalistic (remember Tianamen Square?) but it's changing with the times. People weren't allowed to have a religion, and it became the way it is.
16 :
Atheism is not a religion. It is `no belief in gods`. Buddhists and Taoists are often atheists. Remember that 25% of the popultaion (or thereabouts) of the entire world are Chinese people.
17 :
Cite a source please. I live in the USA.
18 :
There's a difference in lacking belief in god and not being allowed to practice publicly for fear of government persecution.
