If you do not have a work visa, you will have trouble. However, you can get a multiple entry visa godd for 90 days each visit. after the first 90 days go to hong kong . return to mainland china for your second 90 days. When this is almost over go to the local Public Security Bureau and get an extensin to your visa. This is very possible. If no extension which is unlikely, return to hong kong and get another multiple entry visa. If you are not near a bordering province or close to hong kong. It will be best to fly to shenzhen and cross the border there. It is much cheaper. good luck.

the two ways to get an extended visa for a year are 1 - working 2 - studying at a Chinese Univ. The process is not easy and sometimes very frustrating living in Shanghai

You should look on the Chinese Visa web site there are many types of visa that let you stay in China for one year or more. The other thing you will have to do is register your address where you are staying at the police station for a Foreign residents permit ( green book) Its law now and you cant get a long visa without this. So have a look for there web site other than that find the visa office near you they will have all the info you need there and help you in your quest for a visa.

The answer to this question is simple. If you can afford to travel to HK every three months to renew your visa, you can essentially stay as long as you want.. so long as you leave, re-apply and then re-enter.. (and you can afford to do that) If you want to reside in China in the true sense.. you need a "Residence Permit." Z-Working Visa, and X Student Visa are only offered for study and paid working for one year.. Study X-visas are not issued for 6 months study or less, instead they provide a 180 day F visa.. To obtain residence status, a company or school must officially invite you.. Which means they need to apply to 1. Public Security Bureau, 2. SAFEA -or- State Foreign Workers License Dept. Keep in mind, a visa only grants entry for a certain amount of time.. residence status requires certain medical formalities to be underwent within 40 days after arriving in the location where you will reside.. There is a separate process that takes place after you have arrived and are living in China.. For all your questions answered about residing in China visit the link below and good luck..

I believe the only way you can stay continously for an extended period of time in China (12 months) is thru a work permit. Tourist visa gives you at most 90 days continous stay.
