Tell them the elves are on an extended vacation and they drew names out of a hat to see who would fill in for them, and they ended up choosing China.

Just tell em that the elves are trying to hide their identity by sticking "made In China" stickers on all their stuff, so that we wont be able to track 'em down in da north pole....

Tell them that the North Pole got too cold for the elves in winter so they spend that time making toys in China. But most kids will not notice where the toys are made because they will be too busy destroying them.
