I am a permanent resident of US and am thinking of moving to China and live in a rainforest located at Yunnan province,China. But, I am not certain whether the local people or their government would interfere with my seclusion. Can I live DIRECTLY in the forest without problems with locals?

You cant live in China period, some people are granted a permanent resident visa that has to be ruined constantly. VERY few people and only if you are considered a real asset or have made some wonderful contribution to China. You cannot imigrate to China, and no you cant choose to live where you please, every foreign resident has to register with the police.

If there is a house there you can live. But you must register with the local police station and you must have the correct visa. You can't just immigrate to China.

It is impossible. You will be suspected as a drug dealer. Chinese isnt allowed lives even under a bridge.

Yunan province is on the border with Vietnam so if you lived close enough you could leave the country on a regular basis to renew your Visa. but you would have to state where you were living and register with the police if you aren't staying at a hotel or hostel. You'd also need to prove that you have enough money to support yourself. As for living in the forest it may be possible - you'd have to stay at least one night in a hostel each time you came back into the country (you can find something very cheap in Yunan, maybe as low as 30rmb in xishuangbanna), you could then try to fined an isolated bit of forest, but if the authorities caught you you may have problems, and as a foreigner you'd stand out like a sore thumb, but there's plenty of tourists in Yunan coming up from Thailand so you wouldn't have too many problems. The locals are used to tourists.

living in Yunnan province is a good thing. there you can enjoy the best natural beauty in Lijiang and Dali which are the most attractive places I've ever been. Go for that
