Because under Mao religion was forcibly supressed, and because China has a massive population. I can't help but think this question is trying to make some point, though I can't for the life of me fathom what it might be?

Dude, that is a leap to a conclusion. The Cultural Revolution initiated by Chairman Mao mandated that religion not be practiced in the Republic of China. Most people born after that edict knew nothing about religion and therefore did not practice it.

Wow. There are very clever people in China. I'm not saying that God isn't real, but there are more people to become scientists who prove that God isn't real. And then they have kids who are brought up not to believe in God & so on.

China was completely and totally Communist and nationalistic for decades, and now it's easing up on the rule; it's still Communist and nationalistic (remember Tianamen Square?) but it's changing with the times. People weren't allowed to have a religion, and it became the way it is.

Atheism is not a religion. It is `no belief in gods`. Buddhists and Taoists are often atheists. Remember that 25% of the popultaion (or thereabouts) of the entire world are Chinese people.
