I grow up in Hong kong, but my answer might be a bit different than the so-call "Mainland China" 1. Schools in Hong Kong require students to speak 3 language and know written in 2. Speak Cantonese, English and Mandarin(not so popular). So English is a pretty big part not only writing and speaking as well. Since Hong Kong is a big city and use to "belong" to the British, many of us are use to deal with tourist all over the world, so be friendly with someone beside Chinese has never been a issue in my point of view. *Hong Kong main income resource is base on tourist. 2. Hong kong is a very busy city, many of my friends work a 10 hours shift easily, so it gets pretty stressful sometime, especially they don't have a minimum wage law. So there are times you can find a new grads from college making only 8 bucks an hr. There's different law to protect against employee, union is not so popular over there. So I guess employment wise is pretty bad. 3. I ain't sure about Mainland, but in Hong Kong, trading, freedom of speech and many law still goes by what the British use to. Which is definitely better than Mainland. 4. I personally think it's safe in Hong kong, but obviously there's always a getto part of the town like everywhere else. Along with the clean part, the richer the area, the better it is. Which that just apply on every country I assume. Hope this answer your question on some level.

I just returned and it is very different from the US. A lot of poverty. The people work very hard some 7 days a week from day break to dark , They must work hard because the pay is low and they must feed their family. Foreigners are treated very well, but don't talk bad about China. They have no freedom of speech, if they say something bad about the government they go to jail. Everything is censored in China so you will not know what is going on outside if china unless it make China look good. You cant drink the water so drink only bottled water. Security is poor at best so don't go out alone after dark. The police are little help they don't even help the Chinese. Understand they don't know how bad it is there so they think all is OK.

1. In the big cities people speak some English. But you may have to hunt to find people who speak it well. They are very friendly and helpful to non-Chinese. Some of them look down on people with darker skin though (both other Chinese and foreigners) 2. About 86% of Chinese people are farmers. It is a hard life, they work very hard. In the cities, life is a lot more relaxed that in the UK/US. But people work very long hours for not much money. 3. Um. China is very restrictive. Websites are blocked. Politics is not discussed. It's hard to immigrate. Books are censored/banned. 4. Safe- depends where you go, if you take necessary precautions then yes. Clean - it depends where you go. Pollution of the air is a big problem in the cities. I live in China(I'm from the UK) and love it. People's opinions vary though, depending what they have experienced here, and what they know. :-)

I've been living in mainland China for seven years, and honestly, I cannot wait to get out of here. 1. Very few people here speak English unless you visit these cosmopolitan cities like Shanghai and Shenzhen. Well, the schools do teach students "Chinglish" if you understand what i mean. Chinese people, especially girls are a bit over-friendly to foreigners. 2. Stressful? It depends on where you work. I'm studying in an international school in China; the Foreign-born teachers here are having pretty cozy lives. High wages, not so stressful work, thing are fairly cheap here too if currency is concerned. 3. Very strict Internet censorship; twitter, youtube, face book, pornography...All blocked. But if you can get a cool proxy server, it'll be just fine. 4. No guns. Very safe if you are a foreigner. Chinese people don't rob foreigners. Clean? you have no idea what is dirty til you come to China. p.s. if you're interested to teach in china, google Dalian Maple Leaf International School. This is the most well-known international school in China; I don't think they even require a teaching certificate. by the way Dalian is a really beautiful city.

1. many speak chinglish - true. friendly to non-chinese - yes. young girls being "too friendly" to a lot of foreigners - very very true, i just hope they don't get abused. 2. work a lot? -depends on their needs. stressful? -depends on their work. compared to US? - idk 3. freedom? well, u cant use facebook and youtube in china so that kinda sucks. 4. safe? -relatively fine. clean? -not really.

1. More people in China speak English now than India. Many tourist areas have lots of English speakers, though I have friends who work in International trade who barely speak English. 2. Work tends to vary, from long hours and low pay (especially if you have a foriegn boss) through to more relaxed jobs. Not as bad as Korea or Japan. People tend to work longer hours, but do less per hour than western countries. In Western countries we work really hard, then go home early. 3. In China you won't actually notice lack or rights or freedoms on a day to day basis. Most Chinese people speak their mind, complain about the government and so on. 4. Quality of life differs. But generally getting better. Professionals in good jobs have a good life. Many Chinese people are returning from western countries because they can have a better life in China. Some things are more expensive, but other things end up cheaper, so it balances out.
